Summary

One of the crucial problems with which medical teams in charge of vaccination campaigns are confronted with in developing countries is conservation of the vaccines at temperatures ranging between 4 and 8 °C. In rural areas in these countries, doctors must have at their disposal autonomous refrigerating means allowing them to maintain the vaccines at the desired temperature but also to produce ice for refrigerating small portable containers. The author studied, designed, built and tested an entirely autonomous refrigerator, meeting these needs, driven by photovoltaic cells. This equipment can be used in areas where there is no electricity network and/or the fossil fuel supply is too uncertain to allow the use of other refrigeration means.
