Summary
The report illustrates the redevelopment of the oil central heating station in a residential building in the north of Milan, through the combined use of dual stage heat pumps and cogenerator (CHP), with the support of boiler, each of them properly sized and interconnected to achieve their maximum efficiency. The economic and energetic evaluations that led to realize the heating system are reported, identifying the thermal power peak required and the sizes of the generators according to the priorities of operation of the individual. Two additional criteria were introduced in the simulation in order to optimize the efficiency. First criteria, since the size of the cogeneration unit is not always fitting the system, in some cases it is possible to restrict electricity excess placing on the net, setting the plant in the "electric following". In this mode, the missing portion of the thermal energy of the cogenerator is integrated by heat pumps. Into the built model, which takes into account not only the power consumption of the Central Heating Station, but also those of the Distribution, interesting overall efficiency increases of the system have been obtained compared to a standard solution. Second criteria imposed on the system is the forced shutdown of the boiler in particular outside temperature conditions, because of the heat capacity of the building and the plant. This condition is well supported both by the capacity of the entire distribution system and by the ability of heat pumps to recovery heat load when rapid variation of thermal requirements of the building occurs. The results for the first year of operation and the prediction of optimization for the following year will be shown in the conclusion.
