Regenerator for magnetic cooling in shape of a honeycomb.

Author(s) : SARLAH A., POREDOS A.

Summary

A mathematical model for operation of an active magnetic refrigerator (AMR) test bed with a honeycomb-like regenerator is developed and presented. It takes into account two-dimensional, unsteady heat conduction in magnetic material during all four processes of an AMR cycle. The model is further developed to obtain a numerical solution of a transient problem. The utilisation factor of a regenerator, an important parameter that dictates the operation of a test bed, is also developed and discussed. Using a numerical program, the impact of few parameters on the utilisation factor, is discussed. The numerical program was also used to determine the arrangement of magnetic materials in order to obtain a larger temperature span between both ends of a test bed. Finally, results are discussed and some future plans introduced.
