Summary
After a brief, accurate definition of a heat pump, the paper presents the basic parameters involved in heat-pump development. These parameters are: availability of heat-pump technology; economic incentives; political decisions; trained contractors and retailers; end-user awareness; general acceptance of different stakeholders. A short review of the situation in various European countries is presented, with a special focus on geothermal potential. The development of heat pumps in France, with EDF and ADEME as the main players, is investigated.
