Remote cooling at Spedali Civili in Brescia: control, savings and rationalisation.

Il teleraffreddamento degli Spedali Civili di Brescia: gestione, risparmio e razionalizzazione.

Summary

ASM Brescia SpA realized a large new cooling plant in its northern plant, for water cooling supply at Azienda Ospedaliera "Spedali Civili" and at the University of Brescia: the new remote cooling system was completed on 1999 for "Spedali Civili". The chilled water is produced by 4 electric vapour compression chillers, each equipped with two semihermetic centrifugal compressors using water cooling towers. The preference for this plant type has been mainly dictated by the need for controlling the cool delivery with an almost equal energy coefficient for all cooling loads required by the users. The plant, able to supply a total load of about 10 MW refrigeration, offers an excellent functional redundancy, allowing operation at variable water loads. The entire plant performance is controlled in detail by a control system located at the main branch of ASM in Brescia. It is possible to adjust every working cycle, to draft on-line graphs or to file records verifying the temperature, pressure capacity and all data required to inspect accurately the partial and total management costs required for cooling supply. Besides the explanation about ASM Brescia's decision to realize this remote cooling plant, detailing the realization and distribution network, the following report also highlights the management results obtained during years of continuous operation both in summer and winter.
