Summary

Simulation was carried out for an air conditioning system with a new model, based on the chilled water-loop resistance characteristics and previous work comparison between the new model and the pump's affinity laws. Results show that applying the latter to determine parameters of VFD (variable frequency drive) chilled water pumps will result in obvious deviation and underestimate the head and energy consumption of the pumps, since the effects of constant pressure difference and variable resistance coefficients of chilled water loop are not taken into account. Meanwhile, the relationships among the Reynolds number Re, friction resistance coefficient lambda, resistance coefficient of chilled water loop S and air conditioning loads are inspected respectively. The influences of load distribution, constant pressure difference, etc. on energy consumption are also analysed in detail. The most advantageous and most disadvantageous operating conditions are also obtained from the analysis and results. Some suggestions for VFD chilled water pump system design are brought forward at the end of this article.
