Summary
THE CRITICAL CURRENT AND VOLT-AMPERE CHARACTERISTIC ARE FOUND FOR A SUPERCONDUCTING FILM WHOSE WIDTH GREATLY EXCEEDS THE EFFECTIVE PENETRATION DEPTH OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD. AT THE CRITICAL CURRENT THE VORTEX-FREE SUPERCONDUCTING STATE BECOMES UNSTABLE AND A VORTEX CHAIN APPEARS NEAR THE EDGE OF THE FILM. THE VISCOUS MOTION OF THE VORTEX STRUCTURE IS INVESTIGATED IN THE HYDRODYNAMIC APPROXIMATION. AT A VALUE OF THE TOTAL CURRENT WHICH CONSIDERABLY EXCEEDS THE CRITICAL VALUE, A VOLTAGE DISCONTINUITY IS OBSERVED IN THE VOLT-AMPERE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE FILM. BEFORE THE JUMP THE FILM RESISTANCE IS SMALL COMPARED TO THE NORMAL RESISTANCE.
