Summary

THE ARTICLE SUGGESTS THAT MANY OLD WOOD PACKING TOWERS CAN BE UPGRADED BY FITTING PLASTIC CELLULAR PACKING, IMPROVED WATER DROPLET ELIMINATORS AND BETTER WATER DISTRIBUTION APPARATUS. A MAJOR POWER SAVING CAN BE MADE ON WATER PUMPING AS THE HEIGHT OF PLASTIC FILL IS LESS THAN THAT OF WOOD. AN EXAMPLE QUOTED SHOWS THAT WITH REDUCED OUTLET WATER TEMPERATURE, THE SAVING IN POWER TAKEN BY A REFRIGERATION PLANT WAS ABOUT FIVE TIMES THE CAPITAL INVESTMENT COST OVER A TEN YEAR PERIOD. D.W.H.
