Summary
The first retrofit conversion of a large refrigeration plant to operate on the new refrigerants in the South African mining industry took place during 1993 and the pace of change is rapidly increasing with large numbers of machines already converted or with conversions planned. It is concluded that for large water chilling installations, retrofitting to alternative refrigerants is a practical and economical alternative to replacement with new machines.
