Summary
Are return fans necessary? Some designers cannot imagine a system of any substantial size operating without them. Others condemn them and maintain ASHRAE should advocate banning them completely. Opponents of return fans favour power exhaust (relief) fans. This article compares the two systems in terms of energy consumption and control requirements.
