Summary
Due to the challenge in accurately calculating thermophysical properties of lubricant oils and their mixtures with refrigerants, most research on the design and optimization of thermodynamic cycles focuses on working fluids, such as refrigerants, without considering the impact of oils. Our latest developed software package for thermophysical properties tackles this challenge, but requires extensive, reliable experimental data to reduce the uncertainty of the predictions further. The latest review on the thermophysical properties of oil-refrigerant
mixtures was published in 2002, while since then, more data have been measured and published. This paper reviews experimental data on oil-refrigerant mixtures published since 1990, with a focus on data quality, environmental regulations, and the institutions involved in the studies. We summarize 91 publicly available literature sources on the thermophysical properties of 100 lubricants and their mixtures with 25 refrigerants, including data on density (32.1%), viscosity (31.6%), and vapor-liquid phase behavior (36.3%). To enhance the comparability of the published experimental data and address inconsistent labelling, we standardized the labels of the reported oils according to established nomenclatures. This study identifies an apparent lack of experimental data on natural refrigerants mixed with lubricant oils for thermodynamic cycle analysis. The data collected will be used to reduce the uncertainty of the predictions of our software package, and further to develop a digital twin of an existing propane research refrigeration machine.
