Summary

Two drillings have helped to study rock cooling in the tunnel since 1902. Since cutting through, the rock around the tunnel has been cooled by the acceleration of underground water and by induced air currents in the two galleries due to passing trains and the barometric pressure difference between the north and south sides of the Simplon massif. The results of the simulation give the heat flow in the tunnel and the geothermal gradients under the tunnel. The calculated thickness of the cooled rock under the tunnel was 250 meters in 1990.
