Summary

IN JAPAN, FROST HARMS RAILWAY TUNNELS. UNTIL NOW, RAILWAY EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN HIRED TO REMOVE THE ICE LAYER AND ICICLES AT NIGHT. IT WAS DECIDED TO END THESE WORKING CONDITIONS TO AVOID ACCIDENTS, AND TO ADOPTPREVENTIVE MEASURES, BY INSULATING THE TUNNELS. THE ARTICLE DEALS WITH CALCULATION OF THE INSULANT THICKNESS AND WITH OPTIMIZATION USING STATISTIS PARAMETERS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ARE AS FOLLOWS: TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS IN THE TUNNEL, THEMATERIAL THERMAL CONDUCTION AND THE COATING CHARACTERISTICS.
