Summary

Recently, there is increasing concern about global environmental issues, so it is important to achieve a balance between comfort and energy conservation. In indoor environments which actively take in external wind and sunlight, it is possible to choose a comfortable place suitable for a certain type of work as the indoor environment changes. This paper aims to clarify the relation between indoor environment and the evaluation of actions in daily life in a year. We conducted the field study using subjects at two model houses in Toyota City in the summer, autumn, winter, and spring of 2011–2012. The subjects evaluated the thermal environment, lighting environment, and actions in daily life at five places in each house; they evaluated them with the lighting on or off, both in the morning and in the afternoon. Air movement in summer by natural ventilation and sunshine in winter were thought to improve subjects’ evaluations of actions in daily life. In autumn and spring, the evaluations were positively influenced by moderate sunshine. Under a uniform thermal environment created by air-conditioning, the evaluations were influenced not by the change of thermal environment but by the change of lighting environment. In conclusion, the results show that we can live by selecting comfortable places rather than making all places comfortable by equipment. Such a life style would enable both comfort and energy conservation to be achieved and would improve spiritual well-being by enjoying selected places.
