Sick buildings: effects, causes, analysis and prevention.

Author(s) : ROBERTSON G.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Sick building syndrome is a transient illness, and its origins can be associated with a particular building, such as the workplace of the affected persons. The cause is usually a reduced supply of fresh air, and this arises mainly from fuel economy measures, operational errors or lack of cleanliness. Designs based on ASHRAE 62 may not have taken into account the changes from the 1973 Standard in 1981 and again in 1989. Guidelines are on-going inspection and monitoring, and this may become mandatory. A.R.T.
