Simulated performance of a solar assisted heat pump using a latent storage material.

Author(s) : TAMASAUSKAS J., POIRIER M., ZMEUREANU R., et al.

Summary

A new solar assisted heat pump incorporating latent heat storage is proposed. Solar collectors are operated in series with a non-agitated ice storage tank, while a heat pump is used to transfer thermal energy from the ice tank to a warm water storage tank serving heating and domestic hot water demands. System performance is investigated in a high performance home in Montreal using the TRNSYS energy simulation program. Results show a significant reduction in the energy consumption in comparison to the same home using electric baseboards and domestic hot water heaters.
