Solar-boosted heat pumps for energy-efficient water heating.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Conventional flat plate solar water heaters can provide free water heating on hot sunny days, but rely on electric or gas boosters to boost temperatures when there is not enough direct solar radiation available. This reliance increases as the hot water load rises or the climatic conditions become less favourable. An Australian company has developed a system that eliminates this dependence by employing a heat pump to boost the water temperature in a storage tank, using the latent heat freely available in the atmosphere as a heat source. This has resulted in energy savings of up to 75% compared to conventional forms of water heating.
