Summary

The paper reports on an ammonia-water absorption system that is driven by solar energy. The system is designed for comfort air conditioning. All the heat exchangers in the system belong to the compact category as follows: mesoscale heat exchangers as absorber, evaporator and condenser and plate heat exchanger as ammonia generator. The cooling capacity of the system ranges from 5 to 10 kW. The solar panels type (including heat pipes) is characterized by high efficiency due to their capacity of absorption both direct and diffuse radiation. The experimental study showed - on one hand - the viability of compact heat exchangers used in ammonia-water absorption systems and - on the other hand - their high thermal efficiency, illustrated by high heat transfer coefficients in two-phase flow. The small size of the compact heat exchangers that form this system recommends it as viable alternative to the currently used air conditioners.
