Summary

The solubility of pentane, 2-methyl butane, 1-pentane and cyclopentane in liquid nitrogen at 77.4 K was studied using a filtration method. The quantitative analysis of liquid nitrogen solutions containing solid C5 hydrocarbons was carried out using gas-phase chromatography. The solubility of hydrocarbons in liquid nitrogen at temperatures from 64 to 90 K was calculated using the Preston-Prausnitz method. The I12 parameters of the solvent's action were also calculated. The study underlined the relationship between the solubility of aliphatic hydrocarbons in liquid nitrogen at 77.4 K, the boiling temperatures and the critical temperatures of the solutes. The authors observed that solvates or even clathrates could appear in the C5 hydrocarbon solutions in the liquid nitrogen.
