Summary

NEW EXPERIMENTAL FILM BOILING RESULTS ARE GIVEN ON THE CHARACTERISTIC WAVELENGTH DISTURBANCE AND THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT, WHICH WERE OBTAINED FROM A THIN HORIZONTAL WIRE IMMERSED IN LIQUID HELIUM II. THE VAPOUR-LIQUID INTERFACIAL BEHAVIOUR IS ANALYZED IN TERMS OF TAYLOR'S INSTABILITY AND HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS. THE RESULTS ON WAVELENGTH MEASUREMENTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE THEORETICAL PREDICTION. THEY SHOW AN AGREEMENT WITH THIS PREDICTION WITHIN ABOUT 20%, ONLY IF THE VAPOUR FILM AMPLITUDE IS ASSUMED TO BE LARGER THAN THE HEATER RADIUS. THE THEORETICAL MODEL OF RIVERS AND MC FADDEN SEEMS TO BE A GOOD APPROACH.
