One of the truly fundamental design decisions for a cryogenic mission is whether to use stored cryogens or active cryocoolers as the primary cooling system. The issue is often very complex, as there are many technical advantages and disadvantages to each, as well as perceptions about reliability, cost and technical maturity to consider.
