Speed-controlled compact screw compressors with optimized part-load efficiency.

Summary
Over the years, more and more attention has been paid to the part-load coefficient of performance of liquid chillers used for comfort air-conditioning. In addition to existing certification programs for seasonal performance figures (Eurovent => ESEER, AHRI => IPLV), legal requirements pertaining to the energy efficiency of liquid chillers are being established in many countries. As part of a regulation mandated by the Ecodesign Directive, the EU has already established minimal requirements for the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) as of 2019, allowing it to continue positioning products on the European market. Similar regulations are in preparation or have already been introduced in other countries such as China or the US. This paper gives a general overview of the individual efficiency standards with focus on water-cooled liquid chillers. Furthermore, speed-controlled compact screw compressors are presented and the significant efficiency advantages during full- and part-load operation are discussed. The efficiency improvements of the compressors presented are mainly due to the speed control by means of an flanged-on inverter combined with modern permanent magnet motor technology. Furthermore, intelligent control functions are fully integrated which are crucial for efficiency as well as safety aspects.
