SSC MAGNET STRING TESTS AT FERMILAB: CAPABILITIES AND GOALS.

Summary

A SEMICOMPLETE STAND ALONE ACCELERATOR CONTROL AND CRYOGENIC SYSTEM HAS BEEN BUILT AND INSTALLED AT THE E4 SECTOR OF THE FERMILAB TEVATRON. THIS PROTOTYPE SYSTEM WILL SERVE AS A TEST BED FOR THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS DEVELOPED FOR THE SSC. THE EXPERIMENT WILL INCLUDE FIVE 17 METER LONG 40 MM APERTURE DIPOLES AND A CORRECTOR/SPOOL PACKAGE. THIS SYSTEM OFFERS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPANSION. THE PAPER INCLUDES THE GOALS DESIRED AND THE RESULTS OF A PRELIMINARY SYSTEM RUN UTILIZING TWO DIPOLES. AN OVERVIEW OF THE NECESSARY CRYOGENIC, POWER AND DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEMS REQUIRED FOR THE EXPERIMENT IS GIVEN.
