Summary
The All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture (VNIIS), together with ANPK Tekhnolog and Moscow State University, has developed a system for storing and transporting fruit in a controlled atmosphere. Work that has been done by ANPK Tekhnolog on developing controlled atmosphere systems involving the removal of oxygen and carbon dioxide from the storage chambers is described. VNIIS has developed an adsorption unit for removing excess carbon dioxide from the chamber, and this low-cost technology (with running costs 30-50% lower than traditional controlled atmosphere systems) has been incorporated into industrial cold stores in a number of Russian enterprises. Technology has also been developed for transporting fruit and berries across long distances in controlled atmospheres in refrigerated containers.
