Summary

THE AUTHOR CITES EXAMPLES OF STRESS CORROSION IN FITTINGS MADE FROM EXTRUDED BRASS AND USED ON CHILLED WATER SYSTEMS. THE CORROSION CRACKS ARE INTERCRYSTALLINE AND OCCUR WHERE STRESS IS PRESENT ON TAPER THREAD FITTINGS. THE CORROSION MAY BE CAUSED BY MINUTE TRACES OF AMMONIA -POSSIBLY FROM FERTILISERS IN OFFICE POT PLANTS -AFFECTING DAMP BRASS UNDER STRESS. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THIS MIGHT BE AVOIDED IF HOT BRASS STAMPINGS ARE USED. D.W.H.
