Summary

A questionnaire survey was made for examining how residents cool their houses either by opening a window, using window shade, or using an air conditioner during summer with measurements of electrical consumption for air conditioning and indoor air temperatures in insulated and airtight houses compared to conventional houses. It appeared that: in insulated and airtight wooden detached houses, the residents hardly ever open their windows except in the morning, the maximum electrical consumption for air conditioning is 7.4 kilowatts.hour/(m2.month), a new method is more effective than conventional two methods for estimating electrical consumption used for air conditioning in a month during summer season.
