Study on new Marangoni mechanism for absorption in a horizontal fluid layer with surfactant.

Author(s) : KIM J., KIM J. H., KANG Y. T., et al.

Summary

The mechanism of Marangoni convection in absorbent absorption through surface with surfactant has been studied for a recent decade but the explicit understanding is not reached yet. In the paper, a new Marangoni mechanism based on the concept of the state of a surfactant monolayer on the surface is investigated and verified by the visualization of absorption cells of which the existence is predicted characteristically in the model presented. It is considered that the cell is formed by surface diffusion of absorbents on the surface and closely concerned with Marangoni convection cell. For this purpose visualization experiments were conducted in ammonia absorption into water through a surface contaminated by CaCO3 particles. The experimental results show that there is an absorption cell and interestingly it expands and contracts alternately till ammonia absorption ends.
