Summary

In nature, the formation of snow crystals is very intricate including nucleation, growth, and aggregation. Research on the nucleation and growth of snow crystals is important to snowmaking technology. The shape of snow crystals is determined by the crystal lattice of ice and the growth conditions. The critical radius and critical energy barrier for the formation of ice nuclei were determined by analysing the free energy shape of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, which provide the theoretical basis for the study of ice nuclei. The relations between shapes of snow crystals and growth rates were defined theoretically using the relations between the mass growth rates of snow crystals and water vapour flux.
