Subjective evaluation of environment in light well of high rise apartment building.

Summary

A lot of high rise residential building which has a light well (called "Void" in Japan) in the center of them are constructing in Japan. The void, however, opens to the outdoor space at the top and the bottom, it is a very slender space surrounded by residences. Therefore, the Void is defined as an intermediate space between outdoor and indoor.
A questionnaire survey was conducted to make clear the subjective evaluation about the actual conditions of the environment and the significance of this new type space "Void" in a high rise apartment building.
292 answers were replied from residents of two apartment buildings, and they are analyzed in each element of Void's environment. As the result, it is made clear that more than two thirds of residents are almost satisfied with the present various conditions of their Void except some matters that is the expanse of the sky and the noise of public corridor. However, many of residents worry about the air quality in the Void together with the noise in the public corridor.
