SUN-DRIED AIR CUTS COOLING COSTS.
Type of article: Article
Summary
DESCRIBES BRIEFLY AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM POWERED ONLY BY SOLAR ENERGY CLAIMED TO BE ABLE TO CUT COOLING COSTS BY UP TO 95% IN HOT, HUMID CLIMATES. STATES THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A SILICA GEL DESICCANT EMBEDDED IN ROOF PANELS. AT NIGHT MOIST AIR FROM THE HOUSE FLOWS THROUGH THE PANELS WHICH ABSORB THE MOISTURE. DURING THE DAY THE SUN HEATS THE DESICCANT, DRIVING OUT THE MOISTURE, WHILE THE AIR DRIED OUT THE PREVIOUS NIGHT KEEPS THE HOUSE COOL. SUCCESSFUL OPERATION REQUIRES NIGHT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST 8 K COOLER THAN THOSE IN THEDAY. STATES THAT THE CAPITAL COST OF THE SYSTEM AT AROUND 10,000 DOLLARS IS TOO HIGH UNLESS CONVENTIONAL ENERGY COSTS START TO CLIMB. (INT. BUILD. SERV. ABSTR., GB., 25, N 4, 1990/07-08, 90-01282.
