Summary

Almost 9,000 medical magnetic resonance imaging devices were brought on line from 1984 to 1995 for the detection and follow-up of various pathologies, including cancerous tumours. The use of superconducting magnets since 1982 has made possible considerable progress in manufacturing such equipment, particularly in reducing the size and weight of the protective armor, and in reducing helium consumption. The author presents these developments, along with the foreseeable advances in this area.
