Supercritical water oxidation unit destroys organic wastes.
Type of article: Article
Summary
When water is heated and pressurized beyond its critical point, hydrocarbon solubility nears 100% while inorganic solubility is almost zero. It can be used in a process in wich a series of reformation and oxidation reactions destroy aqueous organic wastes at concentrations of up to 20% (liquid oxygen is needed for the process). Almost complete destruction is possible for compounds such as trichloroethylene, dichlorophenol and methanol. Chlorinated hydrocarbons oxidize to methanol and ethanol, and the chlorine is converted to hydrochloric acid. The process is less expensive than incineration and most other conventional disposal methods. A test plant has been operating at the University of Texas since 1991. D.W.H.
