Techno-economic analysis of cold energy recovery in L-CNG stations.

Summary

This work aims at proposing a techno-economic analysis related to two applications of cold energy recovery from the regasification phase of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in a refuelling station (L–CNG station). The first application consists in recovering the cold energy directly to fulfil part of the cooling demand of a service station placed nearby the refuelling station itself. The second application, instead, allows to store energy through the Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) process (charging phase in off-peak hours and electricity production in the on-peak ones) that provides a flexibility service to the national electric grid. The two applications have been analysed from both energy and economic points of view. In particular, the energy recovery and the LAES capacity, as well as the energy saving, have been evaluated. Results showed the positive effect on both energy and economic aspects of the first application, while some critical aspects arose from the use of the LAES system.
