Summary

ABSORPTION REFRIGERATING MACHINES USING WATER AND LITHIUM BROMIDE COUPLE HAVE EXPANDED DRAMATICALLY. SINCE THEIR DEVELOPMENT, ABSORPTION MACHINES HAVE BEEN WIDELY USED TO PROVIDE ENERGY SAVINGS, MINIATURIZATION, REDUCTION IN WEIGHT AND IMPROVEMENTS IN RELIABILITY. CURRENTLY, THEY HAVE BEEN EXTENDED TO COVER NOT ONLY LARGE SCALE BUILDINGS AND DISTRICT COOLING AND HEATING SYSTEMS, BUT ALSO MEDIUM AND SMALL SIZE BUILDINGS. MORE RECENTLY THE RANGE OF USAGE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO INCLUDE TOTAL ENERGY SYSTEMS. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN ABSORPTION WATER CHILLER-HEATERS WHICH ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN 85% OF THE ABSORPTION MACHINES IN SERVICE. FUTURE GENERATION PROJECTS ARE REVIEWED.
