PLANS ARE UNDER WAY IN THE USTO INTRODUCE ANOTHER < FIRST > IN THE TECHNIQUES OF INDOOR CLIMATE CONTROL. AFTER MORE THAN FIVE YEARS OF JOINT FUNDING AND DEVELOPMENT BY A RESEARCH UNIT AND MANUFACTURER, AN ADVANCED HEAT PUMP SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BE PUT ON THE MARKETIN 1989. IT IS CLAIMED THAT THE NEW HEAT PUMP OFFERS HEATING AND COOLING EFFICIENCIES 30 TO 40% BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE HEAT PUMP OF TODAY AND BECAUSE IT INTEGRATES WATER HEATING WITH SPACE COOLING AND HEATING, USERS WILL PAY SUBSTANTIALLY LESS FOR YEAR-ROUND HOT WATER. THE COMPRESSOR CAN OPERATE AT ALMOST ANY SPEED NEEDED TO MATCH THE COOLING OR HEATING LOAD. ALTHOUGH THE NEW HEAT PUMP WILL SELL AT A 50% HIGHER THAN AVERAGE INITIAL COST, USER PAYBACK FROM ENERGY SAVINGS WILL BE ACHIEVED WITHIN FOUR TO FIVE YEARS. A. H. S.
