THE AUTHORS DISCUSS THEIR FIVE-YEAR EXPERIENCE IN THE USE OF CRYOSURGERY ON SELECTED PATIENTS, MAINLY WITHIN AN OTOLARYNGOLOGICAL PRACTICE. LIQUID NITROGEN WAS THE CRYOGENIC AGENT CIRCULATING IN A VACUUM INSULATED PROBE. A PROBE TIP TEMPERATURE OF 123 K (-150 DEG C) WAS GENERALLY USED. THE TUMOUR AREA WAS ANAESTHESIZED LOCALLY AND THE TARGET FROZEN FOR APPROXIMATELY 223 K (-50 DEG C) FOR THREE MINUTES, ALLOWED TO THAW, AND AGAIN FROZEN. DETAILS OF 43 PATIENTS TREATED OVER FIVE YEARS ARE GIVEN AND THE CASES AND TREATMENTS DISCUSSED. CRYOSURGERY IS WELL SUITED FOR THE CURATIVE TREATMENT IN SELECTED CASES OF SMALL INTRAORAL TUMOURS.
