Summary

The addition of certain surfactants in the absorption chiller results in the enhancement of heat and mass transfer in absorber. The reason for enhancement is not yet properly understood. An experimental study was undertaken to study the effect of addition of surfactants on the heat and mass transfer during evaporation, absorption and condensation in a LiBr-H2O refrigeration system. The additives tested were 2-ethyl/1-hexonal, n-octanol and n-heptanol which are most widely used surfactants in the absorption chillers. An extensive experimentation was carried out by the addition of these additives in water in the evaporator with concentration in the evaporator varying in the range of 50-1000 ppm.
