Mechanisms for the action of heat transfer additives.

Author(s) : SETTERWALL F.

Summary

In an absorption heat pump using lithium bromide-water as working media the addition of a small amount of 2- ethyl-1-hexanol drastically increases the heat- and mass transfer coefficients in the absorber. Although the use of a heat transfer additive is considered necessary at least in horizontal falling film absorbers the mechanism for the action is not known. In order to be able to choose the correct additive for any new working media it is necessary to understand the fundamental phenomena that cause the increased heat and mass transfer. The paper highlights actions and gives an example with water-lithium bromide absorption machines.
