A REPORT ON THE FISHING INDUSTRY OF THE FORMER GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. AMONG THE DIFFICULTIES FACED IN WHAT IS NOW THE EASTERN PART OF WESTERN GERMANY ARE AN AGED FLEET, HIGH PERSONNEL COSTS AND AN INSUFFICIENT ORIENTATION TOWARD HIGH-VALUE KINDS OF FISH. IN THE MARKETING SECTOR, AS WELL, THE INDUSTRY FALLS BEHIND, DUE TO A LACK OF AN UNBROKEN COLD CHAIN, POOR TRANSPORT SERVICES, AND INEFFICIENT WHOLESALERS AND RETAILERS. STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED ON 1988 PRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION, IMPORTS AND EXPORTS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF FISH IN THE TWO GERMANIES. M. C.
