THE PAPER STARTS WITH A GENERAL REVIEW OF THE ENERGY SCENE IN WHICH IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ELECTRICITY, PROBABLY FROM NUCLEAR SOURCES, WILL BE THE MAIN ENERGY OF THE FUTURE. THE AUTHOR THEN TURNS TO INCREASED EFFICIENCY OF ENERGY USE, FIRST IN AIR-CONDITIONING AND THEN IN THE USE OF GAS-ENGINE DRIVEN HEAT PUMPS FOR DOMESTIC HEATING. IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGN ARE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE POSSIBILITIES OF QUIETER ENGINES AND MORE EFFICIENT COMPRESSORS NOW UNDER INVESTIGATION. D.W.H.
