Summary

THIS WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN TO EXPLORE THE INFLUENCE OF HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS ON THE CRYOGENIC MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF 304-TYPE STAINLESS STEELS, WHICH ARE METASTABLE AUSTENITIC STEELS THAT TRANSFORM TO MARTENSITE ON PLASTIC DEFORMATION AT LOW TEMPERATURE. THE PRESENCE OF A HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD INCREASES BOTH THE EXTENT AND THE KINETICS OF THE MARTENSITE TRANSFORMATION. THE MECHANICAL EFFECTS PRIMARILY CONCERN THE WORK HARDENING RATE WHICH TENDS TO BE SMALLER AT LOW STRAIN AND LARGER AT MODERATE STRAIN IN THE PRESENCE OF A MGEI IL. THESE EFFECTS ARE EXPLAINABLE IN LIGHT OF THE INCREASED RATE OF THE MARTENSITE TRANSFORMATION.
