Summary

A new form of cristallographic carbon has been obtained in 1985 by laser action on graphite. They have a spherical structure of 60 atoms, designated "Buckminster fullerenes" or "Buckyballs". The authors have taken part in the research carried out until now on this new material and present the results. There seems to be an interesting outlook for use of this material in electronics based on its 3D superconduction. More generally, the family of the "fullerenes" promises wide application in various fields and seems to be similar to organic molecules present in interstellar space. Y.G.
