The qualification and use of miniature tactical cryocoolers for space applications.

Author(s) : MOSER K. S., DAS A., OBAL M. W.

Summary

A novel cryogenic systems design approach for reducing the cost of strategic space based infrared surveillance and ballistic missile defense sensors experiments is presented. This approach uses space qualified tactical cryooolers to replace extremely expensive long life ultra-quiet space crycocoolers. In 1998, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization plans to field a 1-watt Texas Instrument tactical cryocooler to provide an 80 K cooling environment for a Space Test Program flight mission designated as TSX-5. Life testing of this cryocooler has exceeded 4000 hours.
