Summary

AT CERN THE LEP COLLIDER FOR ELEMENTARY PARTICLES IS GOING TO BE EQUIPPED BY EARLY 1994 WITH ABOUT 200SUPERCONDUCTING ACCELERATION CAVITIES TO BOOST THE ENERGY OF THE ELECTRONS AND POSITRONS FROM 55 TO ABOUT 90 GIGA-ELECTRONVOLTS AND REACH THE PRODUCTION THRESHOLD FOR NEW PARTICLES. THE CAVITIES USE NIOBIUM AS SUPERCONDUCTOR AND ARE OPERATED AT 4.5 K IN A LIQUID HELIUM BATH. THE CRYOGENIC PARAMETERS OF THE CAVITY CRYOSTATS ARE PRESENTED AND THE SYSTEMS DESCRIBED FOR PRODUCING AND DISTRIBUTING THE NECESSARY REFRIGERATION TO THE CAVITIES. FOUR POWERFUL REFRIGERATORS WILL BE ORDERED TO PRODUCE INITIALLY EACH AN EQUIVALENT OF 12 KILOWATTS REFRIGERATION AT 4.5 K, BUT WITH THE POTENTIAL OF REACHING 18 KILOWATTS WITH MORE COMPRESSOR FLOW TO COVER FUTURE REQUIREMENTS OF CERN.
