Summary

The article reports on an examination of microorganism behaviour in air filters and their associated release, conducted by Berlin University's Institute for Hygiene since April 1993. It supplies measurement results for two large air conditioning installations. Microorganisms, particularly bacteria, can multiply in the filters when high relative humidities are maintained for long periods. Relatively straightforward measures, such as locating the preheater upstream of the prefilters can prevent the sustained high humidities in the filter chamber, thereby preventing microbial reproduction in the filters.
