THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF CARBON FIBRE / CARBON MATRIX COMPOSITES AT LOW TEMPERATURES.

Summary

THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF WOVEN CLOTH-BASED COMPOSITES OF CARBON FIBRE IN A CARBON MATRIX HAS BEEN MEASURED FOR THREE TYPES OF MATERIAL FROM 80 TO 1. 7 K (IN ONE CASE TO 0.1 K). MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE (A) PERPENDICULAR TO BOTH SETS OF FIBRES AND (B) PERPENDICULAR TO ONE SET AND PARALLEL TO THE OTHER SET OF FIBRES. TWO OF THE SAMPLES CONTAINED PAN-BASED CARBON FIBRE AND THE THIRD WAS MADE FROM A RAYON-BASED FIBRE. THE CONDUCTIVITY OF ALL SAMPLES IS APPRECIABLY LOWER THAN THAT OF CARBON-FIBRE / EPOXY MATERIALS. THE VERY LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND HIGH DIMENSIONAL STABILITY OF THESE CARBON / CARBON COMPOSITES WOULD MAKE THEM VERY USEFUL MATERIALS FOR CRYOSTATS WHICH NEED TO BE CONSTRUCTED TO HIGH PRECISION.
