Summary

MOST PREVIOUS WORK ON MODELLING THE TRANSIENT BEHAVIOUR OF FINNED CROSSFLOW HEAT EXCHANGERS HAS EITHER NEGLECTED THE EFFECT OF THE FINS OR DEALT WITH THEM AS A LUMPED PARAMETER. HERE, THE AUTHOR EVOLVES AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH, TREATING THE HEAT EXCHANGER AS A NUMBER OF BASIC ELEMENTS, EACH BEING A SINGLE SQUARE FIN TOGETHER WITH ITS CORRESPONDING SECTION OF TUBING. VARIOUS ASSUMPTIONS ALLOW A SIMPLIFICATION OF THE EQUATIONS TO A PRACTICAL LEVEL WITHOUT AFFECTING THE VALIDITY OVER A WIDE RANGE OF PARAMETERS. THIS IS ILLUSTRATED BY COMPARISONS WITH TEST RESULTS. THE METHOD ALLOWS TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF LIQUID AND GAS TEMPERATURES AND MASS FLOW RATES TO BE STUDIED FOR ANY CONFIGURATION AND SIZE OF CROSSFLOW FINNED EXCHANGER. D.W.H.
