Summary

THE PAPER HAS REVIEWED SOME OF THE WAYS IN WHICH THE USE OF LOW COST PERSONAL COMPUTERS AND SOFTWARE CAN BE APPLIED TO THE PROBLEMS FACED BY THOSE INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF COOLING SYSTEMS. THE MODELLING OF CYCLES CAN HELP UNDERSTAND THE FACTORS WHICH AFFECT THE EFFICIENCY OF THE CYCLES AND THE EFFECT THAT THE DIFFERENT THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF THE AVAILABLE REFRIGERANTS HAVE ON THE CYCLE PARAMETERS. THE MATHEMATICAL MODELS OF COOLING TOWERS AND EVAPORATIVE CONDENSERS CAN BE USED TO PREDICT THEIR PERFORMANCE. THE ABILITY TO CALCULATE A LARGE NUMBER OF SYSTEM OPERATING CONDITIONS VERY QUICKLY MEANS THAT THE TRUE POWER COSTS OF DIFFERENT DESIGNS COOLING SYSTEMS CAN BE DETERMINED AND THE PLANT OPTIMIZED TO GIVE THE LOWEST OVERALL LIFE TIME COST.
