Theoretical impact of phase change materials in food cold storage and delivery.

Number: 1172

Author(s) : PARKER C., CHURCHYARD B.

Summary

The following paper details the research and calculations conducted to assess the benefits or detriments of integrating Phase Change Materials (PCMs) into different sectors of the ASDA estate. This study modelled the monetary impact of utilising the PCM phenomenon during the high ambient periods of the day throughout a year. During the high ambient periods, refrigeration systems operate at their least efficient state, usually coinciding with the peak electricity tariff rates. The benefit of utilising PCMs reduces the time of plant operation during the least efficient, and high electricity cost period of the day. The developed model indicates that static cold rooms located in retail shops and depots would have a relatively long payback period at the time of this study. Diesel transport vehicles including home delivery and heavy goods vehicles have the strongest monetary savings and favourable payback due to the relatively high cost of diesel per kWh of useable energy.
