Presents the results of an extensive literature review on the topic of thermal adaptation in the built environment, with a focus on air conditioned vs. naturally ventilated buildings. Briefly discusses convectional heat balance models and describes a conceptual model of thermal adaptation in the built environment. Presents a wide range of both climate chamber and field evidence for thermal adaptation of building occupants and discusses the potential of an adaptive thermal comfort theory in therms of predictive modelling, building design, control algorithms and standards.
